W3 Maccarese – Terracina: the final is up for grabs

On a Wednesday with finally winter temperatures, W3 Maccarese hosts Terracina for a match of considerable importance, being the first leg semi-final of the Lazio Cup of Excellence. In the championship the two teams play in two different groups: the home team in the central-northern group, Terracina in the central-southern group.

Maccarese is a fraction of the municipality of Fiumicino, in the province of Rome, just 5 km from the Tyrrhenian Sea. The Arrone river flows through the territory of Maccarese, a 35 km long watercourse which originates in the south-eastern sector of Lake Bracciano, of which it is an emissary, and then flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea between Maccarese and Fregene. The village of Maccarese develops around the castle of San Giorgio, built by the Matteis in the second half of the 16th century and subsequently passed to the Rospigliosi, a family originally from Pistoia, who restored the fortress in the 18th century, giving it its current appearance.

The plain surrounding Maccarese is part of the Agro Romano. If, nowadays, this part of the province of Rome is characterized by agricultural estates, narrow streets, canals and pine forests, until the second half of the nineteenth century it was instead a marshy and unhealthy territory. A first attempt to free these lands from stagnant waters was carried out in the 19th century by the Ravenna laborers’ association, but only in the 1920s was complete reclamation carried out. A monument, which can be seen in the village square, celebrates all the people, especially from north-eastern Italy, who descended on Lazio on the occasion of the first hydraulic reclamation of the Ostia and Maccarese ponds in 1884 and then, precisely, that complete and definitive of 1925.
