China Shines at 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games

The Chinese sports delegation continues to make headlines at the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games, as they secured another gold and a bronze medal on January 25. The team’s impressive performance has propelled them to the top of the medal table, alongside the Italian and Austrian teams.

The standout performance of the day came in the speed skating mixed relay final, where the Chinese team, composed of Liu Yunqi and Pan Baoshuo, clinched the gold medal with a time of 3 minutes and 11 seconds. The thrilling final sprint saw the Chinese team make a strong comeback, securing their fifth gold medal of the games. The South Korean and Dutch teams finished in second and third place respectively.

In a historic moment for Chinese ice hockey, the women’s three-on-three ice hockey team secured the bronze medal in a closely contested match against Italy. The Chinese team managed to edge past their opponents 8-7, with Captain Zhang Anna delivering the decisive blow in the penalty kick opportunity. This marks the first-ever Winter Youth Olympic medal for Chinese ice hockey, as well as their first medal in an Olympic series event.

Despite a valiant effort, the Chinese curling mixed team fell short in their quest for a medal, losing to the Swiss team 8-10 in the bronze medal match. The British and Danish teams clinched the top two spots in the event.

With a total of 14 medals, including 5 golds, 7 silvers, and 2 bronzes, the Chinese sports delegation has surpassed their medal count from the 2016 Lilleha Meer Winter Youth Olympic Games and Lausanne 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games. They now sit at the top of the medal table alongside Italy and Austria, showcasing their dominance at the games.
