Zhang Zhizhen, a Chinese tennis player, made a strong showing in the third round of the men’s singles at the 2024 ATP1000 Rome Masters, advancing to the top 16 after defeating American player Sheldon, the 12th seed, in straight sets 6:2, 6:4.

This victory comes after Zhang Zhizhen’s recent struggles in Barcelona and Madrid where he suffered early exits. Facing a higher-ranked opponent in Sheldon, Zhang Zhizhen demonstrated a fiery performance in the match, breaking the opponent’s serve and winning the first set 6:2. In the second set, he maintained a stalemate with his opponent before clinching the win at 6:4, completing the game in just 70 minutes.

“I basically used everything I prepared. He did a good job receiving the serve today. He maintained his condition very well and did not give his opponent a chance,” Zhang Zhizhen commented on his victory.

With this win, Zhang Zhizhen’s world ranking rose to 51st, and he is set to face Brazilian qualifier Monteiro in the next round. Monteiro secured his spot by defeating Serbian player Kecmanovic in three sets. Zhang Zhizhen remains optimistic about his chances in the tournament, stating that everyone in the draw is in good condition and has a chance, with his sights set on reaching the semi-finals.

Zhang Zhizhen’s impressive performance at the Rome Masters is a testament to his determination and skill on the court, showcasing his potential to make a deeper run in the tournament. Fans will be eagerly anticipating his next match as he continues to make waves in the men’s singles competition.
