Did some of you feel like you’ve read something like this before? That’s because Amazon announced back in 2019 that it was developing a free-to-play massively multiplayer online game in the Lord of the Rings universe, and Tencent canceled it two years later when it didn’t want another deal. The last part is an important note because it explains today’s announcement.
Embracer Group, which last year acquired the Middle-earth Enterprise and video game rights based on the “Lord of the Rings” literature, announced that Amazon is making a new open-world “Lord of the Rings” MMO for PC and “consoles.” This doesn’t sound like a revival of the aforementioned game, as the press release says the project is in early production, so we may have to wait a while to see it in action.
It’s worth mentioning, though, that the game is being developed by Amazon Games’ Orange County-based New World developers, so that might give us an idea of what to expect.
