AMD to Invest in AI Technology for Video Game Devices by 2024
AMD is gearing up to invest in the research and development of AI artificial intelligence technology in its video game-related devices, with 2024 set to be a significant year for their GPUs and CPUs. In a recent interview with the No Priors podcast, AMD Chief Technology Officer Mark Papermaster revealed that the company has been focusing on the compatibility of its hardware and software with artificial intelligence research and development.
Papermaster stated, “We have recently completed the integration of AI in all of our products, including cloud, EDGE, PC, embedded devices, and gaming devices. We will use AI to enable resolution enhancement for our gaming devices, and 2024 will be a year for us to fully deploy these advancements.”
While the specific AI technology to be used in AMD’s gaming GPU and CPU devices was not disclosed, it is speculated to be FidelityFX and Super Resolution (FSR), AMD’s super sampling technology. Unlike Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) and Intel’s Xe Super Sampling (XeSS), FSR does not currently utilize AI for assistance. However, it is expected that AMD’s next-generation GPU product, “RDNA 4,” will integrate AI-related technologies.
AMD’s entry into the AI technology market comes later than its competitors Nvidia and Intel, who have been investing in AI-related technologies for years. Nvidia’s DLSS technology, in particular, has made it a market leader in video game hardware, with its market value recently surpassing US$2 trillion.
As major technology companies continue to invest in AI-related technologies for their hardware, the competition in the market is becoming increasingly fierce. It remains to be seen whether AMD, despite its late entry, can successfully compete in this competitive landscape and offer consumers more choices in the future.
