AMD to Invest in AI Technology for Gaming Devices in 2024
In a recent interview with the No Priors podcast, AMD Chief Technology Officer Mark Papermaster revealed that the company is finally gearing up to invest in the research and development of AI artificial intelligence technology for its video game-related devices. According to Papermaster, 2024 will be a crucial year for AMD’s GPUs and CPUs as they incorporate AI technology into their hardware and software.
Papermaster shared that AMD has been working tirelessly on ensuring the compatibility of its hardware and software with artificial intelligence research and development. The company’s internal team has been focused on integrating AI technology into all their products, including cloud, EDGE, PC, embedded devices, and gaming devices. AMD plans to use AI to enable resolution enhancement for its gaming devices, with 2024 set to be the year for the full deployment of this technology.
While Papermaster did not disclose the specific AI technology that AMD will be utilizing, he hinted at the possibility of FidelityFX and Super Resolution (FSR) being incorporated into their next-generation GPU product, RDNA 4. Unlike Nvidia’s DLSS and Intel’s Xe Super Sampling (XeSS), FSR currently does not rely on AI for assistance. However, AMD’s foray into AI-related technologies for gaming devices is a significant step for the company, placing it in competition with industry leaders like Nvidia and Intel.
Nvidia has been at the forefront of AI technology in gaming hardware with its DLSS technology, which has propelled the company to a market value exceeding US$2 trillion. As more major technology companies invest in AI-related technologies for their hardware, the competition in the market is intensifying.
