Arthaus+ surprised me positively

You can subscribe to additional channels with films and series on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV+. I’ve ignored it so far, but recently I discovered Arthaus+. The offering is surprisingly diverse and has something to offer for everyone.

A comment from Stefan Bubeck.

Arthaus+: A worthwhile channel with a wide range

For some, the “Arthaus” label is a guarantee of first-class entertainment – for others it is a kind of warning label for intellectual material that is difficult to digest. I too have made a pretty rough distinction so far: Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video in particular concentrate on bombast action and popcorn cinema, at Arte or at Arthaus+ However, only dialogue-heavy chamber plays are shown. Well, I wasn’t entirely right.

First of all, like probably many people, I have the additional channels from the streaming apps so far ignored. Why pay more when you’re already paying for the actual streaming service? But recently I spontaneously overcame myself: 3.99 euros per month and try it out for free for 7 days – you can click on it and see what Arthaus+ actually has to offer. And as expected, they’re all there: the boring favorite films of the educated middle class, the winners of some film festival that you’ve never heard of, the experimental auteur films that probably no one except the author understands. But the surprise followed within a very short time: Wait a minute, there’s Tarantino’s „Pulp Fiction“! And there is „La La Land“. Hey, “Ferris Makes You Blue”, “The Rattlesnake”, “American Beauty” and „Sicario“ are attending! Most of it is a bit older – but definitely good entertainment that you don’t need an explanatory guide or a degree in cultural studies to get along with.

Watch again and finally catch up

I have already seen some films, but some of them many, many years ago. I have fond memories of her: „Panic Room“, „The Wrestler“, „From Dusk Till Dawn“ or “Bill & Ted’s Crazy Journey Through Time”. They’re worth another look, no question about it. I can also fill in a few gaps and think of Steven Spielberg, for example “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” finally take a look. And to be honest, I occasionally feel like sophisticated food that reactivates the brain after intellectual low-flyers like “Transformers – The Revenge”. Perhaps “Mulholland Drive – Street of Darkness” or „Night on Earth“? Let’s see.

Arthaus+ is available on Amazon Prime Video and on Apple TV+ as an additional channel. Since November 2023, it has also been available independently as an independent “Arthaus+ app” (see press release). The costs are always 3.99 euros per month.
