A new hoax circulating on WhatsApp is tricking users into downloading a fake trading platform application under the guise of a false promotion. The scam begins with a message offering free gigabytes for internet surfing, leading users to a webpage claiming they have won money in a raffle they never entered.
The deception continues as users are prompted to download an app from Google Play that simulates trading cryptocurrencies. While no material harm has been detected for those who install the app, it aims to increase downloads through deceit, potentially leading to scams, theft of information, or hijacking of accounts.
Computer Security Researcher Fabiana Ramirez from Eset Latin America warns against clicking on suspicious links or sharing personal information with unknown sources. Once on the fake website, users are asked to enter their phone number and share the message with contacts to advance.
Upon completing these steps, users are directed to Google Play to download the illegitimately promoted app. Despite positive ratings and user comments, the app has deceived many individuals who believed they would earn real profits through it.
ESET recommends staying cautious of tempting promotions and gifts, avoiding unknown links, and conducting thorough research before downloading applications. Implementing security updates, using anti-malware solutions, and staying informed about potential risks are crucial steps to protect against such scams.
