EA: Hundreds of layoffs and new “Star Wars” game canceled

The wave of layoffs in the gaming industry never ends. After Microsoft and Sony were hit in the past few weeks, EA now also has to let go of hundreds of employees.

Five percent of the entire workforce has to leave. EA CEO Andrew Wilson announced this in a blog post. Since the company employs more than 13,000 people, that means more than 650 people.

“I know this will create uncertainty and challenge for many who have worked with great commitment and passion and made important contributions to our company,” said Wilson. In the current situation, however, you have to revise your own company processes.

In addition, more than just personnel changes are planned. According to IGN, the new “Star Wars” game is also said to have been canceled. The game was originally supposed to be developed by Titanfall maker Respawn and would supposedly have been about The Mandalorian. But that will probably no longer happen.

EA is not the only major publisher that is currently having to part ways with its employees. Just a few days ago it was announced that 900 employees at Sony would have to leave. At Microsoft’s XBOX division, 1,900 employees are said to be affected. It is estimated that more than 6,000 jobs will have been cut across the entire gaming industry in 2024.
