Microsoft Plans to Introduce New Hardware Standards for AI-equipped PCs

According to a report from market research firm TrendForce, Microsoft is gearing up to establish new hardware specifications for PCs integrated with artificial intelligence capabilities. The proposed standards mandate that these computers must be outfitted with a minimum of 16GB of RAM. These adjustments are expected to coincide with the release of the Windows 11 23H2 version, which will feature native AI functions. The primary motivation behind these changes is to cater to the hardware requirements of advanced AI tools like generative Copilot, which necessitate device acceleration.

In addition to the 16GB RAM requirement, the AI-enabled PCs must also be equipped with a specialized NPU neural processing unit to facilitate the local and cloud computing necessary to support the Copilot feature. It is speculated that beginning in 2024, 16GB RAM could become the standard configuration for all general consumer Windows desktop computers and laptops. Moreover, commercial-grade PCs may need to be equipped with 32GB or 64GB of RAM to meet the prescribed standards. This mandate is anticipated to extend to non-AI computers as well, as manufacturers adjust their standard configurations in response to evolving customer expectations.

While Microsoft is yet to officially acknowledge TrendForce’s report, the tech giant had previously announced its intention to revamp the traditional PC keyboard layout to accommodate Copilot keys tailored for AI operations. Moreover, Microsoft declared plans to introduce a premium paid version of Copilot, hinting at the likelihood of corresponding specification changes for AI-enabled computers.

As the tech industry continues to push the boundaries of artificial intelligence integration, Microsoft’s prospective hardware standards signal a proactive shift towards optimizing PC capabilities for AI-driven functionalities.
