Experience report: Wicked Cushions, cooling ear cushions for your headphones

When it comes to wired headphones, I’m a big fan of Beyerdynamic. So I have some models here, some of which are well over 10 years old.

Technically they are still perfect, but the ear cushions are no longer in the best condition. Appropriately, I stumbled across Wicked Cushions.

Wicked Cushions offers alternative ear cushions for many well-known headphone/headset manufacturers. These include Bose, Sony, Corsair, Logitech, Sennheiser and Beyerdynamic.

What is special about the “Wicked Cushions”? These should be particularly comfortable and particularly cool thanks to a gel inside. I find the latter in particular exciting, because there is nothing worse than warm ears.

In short, I ordered the Wicked Cushions to fit Beyerdynamic. In this little article you will learn about my experiences.

Order in the shop

I ordered the Wicked Cushions directly from the manufacturer’s online shop. What I didn’t know is that these are delivered via Amazon.

Therefore the delivery time was extremely short. What I only discovered afterwards is that Wicked Cushions can also be ordered regularly via Amazon.

Wicked Cushions, the first impression

The Wicked Cushions for my Beyerdynamic T90 came in a fairly simple “zip” plastic bag.

Included is just a card with a link to the manufacturer’s website for installation instructions.

The Wicked Cushions are made from a fabric mix. The area that touches your ears is a slightly coarser and airier material, the sides are a slightly denser material.

This means that they have a significantly different material mix than the original ear pads on my Beyerdynamic.

They are also quite a bit thicker. My old ear cushions are certainly a bit worn out, but the Wicked Cushions are undoubtedly a few mm thicker than the cushions when they were new.

According to the manufacturer, there is a cooling gel in the ear cushions. However, purely from the feel, this could also be a very dense memory foam.

Accordingly, the headphones adapt well to the ears and head shape.

Montage

There’s not much to say here. The Wicked Cushions fit perfectly on the Beyerdynamic T90. So the fit was successful.

Feeling on the head, really cooling?

First of all, I have to say that, in my opinion, the original ear pads of the Beyerdynamic T90 were among the better ones on the market.

In direct comparison, the Wicked Cushions feel quite a bit different. I don’t mean this negatively or positively.

The T90’s fabric ear pads were very comfortable and soft. Also tends to be a little warmer, due to the quite “fluffy” fabric.

The Wicked Cushions are almost the exact opposite. These sit a little looser and significantly cooler on the ears.

And yes, that’s really the most noticeable thing, the temperature. As advertised, the ear pads feel “cold”. Even after wearing it for a long time, this feeling remains.

The fabric in contact with your ears/head feels quite smooth and airy, which contributes to the fairly cool feel of the ear pads.

Due to their high thickness, the earphones are generally very comfortable and comfortable. So yes, these are really comfortable, especially if you like it airy and cool.

However, especially if you are coming from headphones with synthetic leather ear cushions, the material of the Wicked Cushions is something completely different.

Change in sound?

Does the Wicked Cushions change the sound? Yes, of course! Ear pads and their thickness have an influence on the sound.

The T90s feel like they have a somewhat powerful upper bass range. Otherwise, they may sound a bit further and, in turn, more distant, but it’s hard to say.

But I don’t need any of that because I measured the headphones.

As we can see here, yes we have gained some bass volume. The heights are +- identical, although surprisingly they seem a little less “harmonious” when measured.

Subjectively, I didn’t notice this.

Conclusion on the Wicked Cushions

The Wicked Cushions are a very interesting thing, especially if you are not satisfied with the comfort of your current headphones/headset.

Many gaming headsets in particular feel very warm on your head.

The Wicked Cushions are exactly the opposite. As advertised these are very cool, smooth and soft. The padding is also very thick.

Accordingly, the wearing comfort is good and a clear “upgrade” for most headphones/headsets.

However, you also have to like that slightly cooler and smooth feeling. If you prefer something soft and cuddly, these may not be right for you.

There was a slight change in sound, in favor of the bass. However, this difference could be more noticeable in models with artificial leather ear pads.

In short, yes the Wicked Cushions are good and may be worth a try, especially if your current headphones are too warm for you.
