Greentech Epson only wants to use electricity from renewable energies

According to its own information, the Japanese technology group Epson now only uses electricity from renewable sources at all of its locations worldwide. This makes the tech company from Nippon the first[1] Japanese manufacturing company that has implemented this goal globally.

By using green electricity to cover the group’s annual needs of around 876 GWh [2] CO2 emissions will be reduced by more than 400,000 tons.

In its Environmental Vision 2050, Epson has committed to being carbon negative by 2050 and not using any non-renewable raw materials[3] to use more. The exclusive use of electricity from renewable sources is a milestone on the way to achieving complete decarbonization.

This approach also gave rise to the goal of having this at all locations by the end of 2023[4] to switch to 100 percent green electricity worldwide. While the changeover for all branches based in Japan was already completed in November 2021, all worldwide representatives followed suit at the end of December 2023.

Epson will not only use electricity from renewable energies, but also promote the use of this sustainable energy on a broad basis. The company will generate more of its own electricity and also develop sustainable sources with projects such as “co-creation”.[5] support. The Group will also further reduce the amount of energy associated with the production of its products as well as their distribution and recycling.

Greentech Epson sees itself as a pioneer

Yasunori Ogawa, global president, said: “Epson has been committed to environmental protection for eight decades. We upheld Epson’s founder’s commitment to maintaining the cleanliness of nearby Lake Suwa and were the first company in the world to eliminate CFCs from its manufacturing processes. We have now successfully completed the switch to 100 percent green electricity at all Epson Group locations – within just two years and ten months of our own commitment in 2021.

This will not only help us achieve our own goals, but also help enable wider adoption of renewable electricity across society by increasing awareness of the issue. Our goal of achieving social sustainability is a big issue and an enormous task, but we will act decisively to address the issues creatively and with ambition.”

The company remains committed to achieving its ambitious goal of operating in a highly sustainable manner and enriching the social communities in which it operates.
