Butterflies and moths serve as inspiration for modern technological developments and scientific applications. Researchers from the Institute of Microstructure Technology at KIT have examined the transparent wings of moths and found that microscopically small, cone-shaped columns in a random arrangement and size on the surface of the wings are the reason for the high transparency. They provide an anti-reflective layer that allows light to pass through without refracting or reflecting it.
