Greentech specialist Tado becomes an energy provider – intelligent electricity meters are a prerequisite

Greentech Tado electricity provider

The Munich SmartHome and Greentech specialist Tado° is today launching the availability of the dynamic HOURLY electricity tariff as an energy provider in Germany.

According to the provider, customers can now save up to 35% of their annual electricity costs by switching with cost-optimized consumption and hourly billing at the purchase price.

With tado°’s energy management solutions, households can shift electricity consumption to the hours when there is a lot of wind and solar energy available and the energy price on the European Power Exchange is particularly cheap. If the electricity price is negative when there is a surplus of green energy, customers are even compensated for charging their electric car or operating their heat pump.1

Greentech: Customers significantly reduce energy costs

This means customers can significantly reduce their annual energy costs and at the same time help ensure that less green electricity from wind and solar power plants remains unused.

According to Eigenangeban, tado° not only enables households in Germany and Austria to reduce energy costs by reducing their consumption. As an energy provider, the company is now helping to reduce the price of electricity to be paid with the HOURLY tariff by shifting consumption to the times of day when cheap green energy is available on the network.

Benefit from volatile energy market prices with energy management

The tado° HOURLY tariff is aimed at users who can flexibly shift the majority of their energy consumption. The tariff offers hour-by-hour price transparency in real time. In conjunction with an energy management app, households that control heating and hot water via a heat pump or charge an electric car using their home wallbox can easily determine for themselves when and at what price the buffer storage is filled or the electric car is charged – automatically and accordingly respective comfort requirements.

By specifically consuming green electricity, customers are also driving the energy transition.

Save €300 a year when charging electric cars

tado° HOURLY customers use the tado° Smart Charging app to take advantage of the volatile prices on the electricity exchange for intelligent charging of their electric vehicle at their home charging station. The app automatically plans the charging process at home during times when energy prices are low, regardless of when the electric car is connected to the wallbox. Households can easily save an average of €300 on annual charging costs for electric vehicles.2 tado° Smart Charging is available free of charge in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Typically save €430 on heating costs

The tado° HOURLY tariff also reduces heating costs with the intelligent heat pump control from tado°. The solution enables households to control the operation of heat pumps easily, intelligently and efficiently in order to increase their cost-effectiveness. In combination with hourly dynamic electricity tariffs, the annual electricity costs of heat pumps can typically be reduced by €430.3 The smart heat pump control shifts the energy consumption for heating and hot water to times when electricity is particularly green and cheap.

This is how the tado° HOURLY electricity tariff works

tado° purchases electricity every hour from the European Electricity Exchange via its wholly owned subsidiary aWATTar and passes on the prices plus network fees and taxes directly to the customers. Customers receive an electricity bill every month based on measured consumption including the network bill.

In a typical year there are several hundred hours in which a particularly large amount of solar or wind energy is produced and electricity prices are negative. These are also passed on 1:1 to customers and credited to the electricity bill. On energy.tado.com, customers can view electricity prices for the current day as well as the past days and weeks. Every day from 2 p.m. the prices for the following day are also displayed on the website.

Intelligent electricity meters are a prerequisite

In order for customers to be able to use the HOURLY tariff, an intelligent electricity meter (smart meter) is required. Such a meter can be requested from the local network operator or the regional municipal utility. In some regions, meter replacement is free of charge. Until the meter is replaced, a tariff applies that dynamically adapts to the electricity exchange on a monthly basis.

Availability ab immediately on tado.com

The switch from the old electricity provider to tado° is then carried out automatically in the background. Until further notice, monthly billing will be carried out via the tado° subsidiary aWATTar. Further information about the tariff can be found at www.tado.com/de-de/dynamischer-stromtarif.
