Resizable BAR Technology Extended to Older Platforms, Improving Game Performance
Resizable BAR technology, a key capability in modern processors and graphics cards, is now available on many older platforms, offering users the ability to optimize system resources and improve performance in gaming.
Initially supported only on specific GPUs and motherboards, Resizable BAR allows PCIe devices to negotiate BAR sizes, enhancing the communication between the CPU and GPU. This feature has been particularly beneficial for AMD processors paired with AMD graphics cards, but mainstream cards like NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 20 and GTX 16 series have lacked support for this technology.
For users still utilizing GTX 16 and RTX 20 series graphics cards, an unofficial UEFI driver called “NVStrapsReBar” has been developed to enable Resizable BAR. While installation may require some technical skills, the potential performance improvements make it worth a try. However, the actual impact on performance has not been extensively tested, and caution is advised before proceeding with the installation.
It is unlikely that Resizable BAR will be implemented on the earlier GTX 10 series graphics cards. Additionally, NVIDIA has officially discontinued the GTX 16 series, with inventory expected to be sold out within 1-3 months, marking the end of the GTX name in their product lineup.
As technology continues to advance, the availability of Resizable BAR on older platforms offers users the opportunity to enhance their gaming experience and maximize the capabilities of their hardware.
