Vision Pro introduces “Space Roles” to enhance virtual collaboration

Apple’s latest mixed reality (MR) goggles, Vision Pro, have introduced a new feature called “Space Roles”, aimed at enhancing virtual collaboration and gatherings. This feature allows users to interact with virtual personas placed directly next to them in the virtual space, creating a more immersive experience.

According to a report by Engadget, users with operating systems visionOS 1.1 or above can access this feature starting today. The purpose of “Space Roles” is to make collaboration and gatherings feel more natural, enabling users to work on presentations, watch movies, play games through “SharePlay”, and feel like their friends are by their side. Up to six people can participate in this feature simultaneously.

Compared to Meta’s virtual collaboration tools and Microsoft’s HoloLens 2, Apple’s approach with Vision Pro and “Space Roles” is seen as more refined and user-friendly. Users have the option to enable or disable this feature during FaceTime calls, allowing them to customize their virtual experience according to their preferences.

However, Engadget reporters who tried Vision Pro noted that the space characters can come off as creepy and robotic. While Apple continues to work on improving this aspect, users may find the feature more useful when interacting with friends who are physically present. Overall, Apple’s introduction of “Space Roles” signifies a significant step towards creating a more engaging and immersive virtual experience for users.
