Micropayments instead of subscriptions: Browser developers are working on a new payment method

Websites on the Internet have to finance themselves somehow. Some rely on the implementation of advertising, while others rely on a subscription model. However, there could be another option in the future: micropayments.

The idea behind it is quite simple. While with a classic subscription model you pay monthly to get access to a whole collection of content, micropayments are significantly cheaper and more precise. You only pay a small amount of a few cents (or even less) and can then, for example, access a very specific news article that would otherwise be behind a paywall.

This approach is intended to help operators monetize their website more efficiently. For example, you can attract people for whom a classic subscription model is too expensive or who are only interested in a single topic anyway.

The idea is fundamentally not new and the Brave browser already offers such a payment system. Now the technology has also come into the focus of Chromium developers. “It provides a way for content creators and website owners to be compensated for their work without relying solely on advertising or subscriptions,” says developer Alexander Surkov.

Chromium is not only the basis of Google Chrome, but also of Microsoft Edge, Opera and Vivaldi, among others. An implementation would therefore directly cover the majority of the entire market. We will be curious to see whether micropayments are really coming and whether they can be implemented in practice. What do you think about the idea?
