While the clash between Spotify and Apple rages and becomes more bitter, especially following the maxi fine of almost 2 billion euros imposed by the European Union to the Cupertino giant following the complaint from the Northern European company, a u-turn comes from the music streaming platform.
Although the new iOS 17.4 launched last night allows it, in fact, Spotify will not allow users with an iPhone or iPad to make in-app purchases of subscriptions directly from the client for iOS and iPadOS.
Speaking to The Verge, Spotify explained that it made this decision in response to the ruling of the European Commission for “abuse of dominant position in the music streaming market”. Rather than allowing users to subscribe from the app, Spotify will insert a new section into the client where all the benefits provided by the subscription levels with the related prices will be explained.
Users will be able to subscribe by following a link that will redirect to their website, where all you have to do is enter your payment details to make the payment. Obviously, everything is linked to approval by Apple, which will have to give the green light to the change.
The conflict therefore becomes increasingly bitter and with this decision, in fact, the company that manages the most popular streaming service on the market refuses to collaborate with Apple and wants to make the most of the European Commission’s decision.
