After having discussed the Microsoft CEO’s statements on Rabbit R1, we return to referring to the world of artificial intelligence due to other not insignificant statements. This time it was Sam Altman who spoke out.
In this regard, as also reported by The Verge and Reuters, during an event in Davos held at the beginning of 2024 the OpenAI CEO focused on the key steps that he deems necessary so that important progress can actually be made in the field of artificial intelligence. Among these, precisely, there is the issue of clean energy.
“We currently do not appreciate the energy requirements of this technology. […] There’s no way to settle this without a breakthrough. We need nuclear fusion or radically cheaper solar energy with associated large-scale storage systems“, explained Altman. Simply put, the future of artificial intelligence is expected to consume an enormous amount of energy and according to the CEO of OpenAI it is necessary to progress in that field too to be prepared for innovation.
It’s worth noting that a startup called Helion, also backed by Microsoft (as well as Altman), is trying to develop a nuclear fusion generator. However, there are many experts who indicate that it could take at least decades to achieve this goal. Perhaps, therefore, it will be better to focus on solar energy, even if there is the unknown issue of batteries involved. How will it end? We’ll see.
