In an unexpected announcement, especially since it comes just hours before its annual I/O 2024 event, Google revealed that it has signed a collaboration agreement with HP to “begin commercialization of Project Starline during 2025”.
Starline, what we tried last year precisely on the occasion of the previous I/O event (remaining honestly impressed), it is a technology dedicated to videoconferencing that can be described as a middle ground between virtual reality avatars from Meta or Apple and holograms from Star Wars. But it works better than both.

“Integrated in Google Meet and Zoom”
Come we told then (Who)Project Starline is a combination of hardware and software: no visor to wear, but two large screens where caller and recipient are reconstructed to perfection in 3D thanks to the cameras positioned above, left and right of the panels, with artificial intelligence putting the images together and processing them practically in real time.
Then we imagined that i two obstacles at a quick sale of Starline they would have been there computing ability necessary to process the information obtained from the cameras and the cost I live with the devices needed to make everything work. With today’s announcement, Google revealed that the choice of HP is not random: “Their experience in the IT field, combined with the commitment to the collaborative solutions of the Poly range (HP’s products for remote working, ed. ), puts them in a unique location to bring this new and innovative experience all over the world.”
It is not yet clear what this means from an economic point of viewfor companies or individuals who want to buy a terminal for Project Starline, but Google explained that “we are working to integrate it directly into video conferencing services more commonly used, such as Meet and Zoom”.
The company also has opened a minisite (This) which collects further information on the product and opens with a new video showing the device in operation: it is the same one found further up on this page, but it is not even remotely capable of giving an idea of what it means see this technology in action live.
