Digital Foundry Reveals Details About Sony PlayStation 5 Pro “Trinity” Console

In a recent video posted online by Digital Foundry, new information about the upcoming Sony PlayStation 5 Pro game console, codenamed “Trinity,” has been shared. The most notable update is the console’s GPU, which boasts a maximum operating frequency of 2.35GHz.

Screenshots from the Digital Foundry video showcase details sourced from the Sony developer website. The PlayStation 5 Pro’s GPU features a 30WGP / 60 CU design, with an upgraded GLOV cache size from 16KB to 32KB. Additionally, advancements in ray tracing technology have also been made.

Digital Foundry reports that the latest information solidifies previous findings that the PlayStation 5 Pro’s GPU contains 30 groups of WGP/60 groups of CU units. The increased maximum frequency of 2.35GHz surpasses previous reports of 2.18GHz. This enhancement will result in improved single-precision floating point performance ranging between 33.5TFLOPS and 36.1TFLOPS, along with larger caches to bolster ray tracing capabilities.

While the customized SoC primarily focuses on GPU improvements, the CPU utilizing the Zen 2 architecture has also been upgraded. It now offers a “high CPU frequency mode” operating at 3.85GHz, 10% higher than the standard version. Users have the option to switch to the “standard mode,” running at 3.5GHz. Opting for the former allocates more power to the CPU, with a corresponding decrease in GPU frequency and slight performance loss.

Although an official release date for the Sony PlayStation 5 Pro has yet to be announced, insiders suggest a launch in November of this year. Gamers can potentially get their hands on the new console before the holiday season kicks off. Stay tuned for further updates on this highly anticipated gaming device.
