Sony: PlayStation games cross-platform in the future?

Sony now wants to release first-party games more quickly for other platforms. In the past, this could take quite a long time.

Which: Sony

New Sony president and PlayStation chairman Hiroki Totoki recently confirmed this news to investors. He explained:
“In the past, we wanted to popularize consoles, and the main purpose of a first-party title was to popularize the console.” Now that the console has achieved a satisfactory level of popularity, they want to increase their profits in the gaming segment.

Totoki spoke of “multi-platform” releases, but it should be known that he is talking about an additional release for the PC. He sees an opportunity in that a game with multi-platform releases can grow faster and thus help increase operating profits. Sony wants to continue working on this project in the future. Games like “Horizon Zero Dawn”, “God of War” or “Marvel’s Spider-Man” show that publishing on multiple platforms definitely makes a profit.

Earlier this month, Sony released Helldivers 2 on the same day for PS5 and PC, although in the past it takes months or even years for Sony to make their first-party titles available for PC. The result was PlayStation Studios’ highest Steam concurrent player record to date, with more users playing Helldivers 2 simultaneously on PC than previously seen ports of better-known Sony IPs such as God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn and The Last of Us Part I. This may have spurred Sony to continue on this path in the future.
