Back to the roots, I’m experiencing a surprising renaissance of SMS

Even in the trio we couldn’t agree on using a common messenger. This has led to a few communication confusions when a message was accidentally exchanged between only two people and the third person was cut off: “I wrote to you that I would be a little later today” – “No, I didn’t get the message” – “But didn’t I write to both of you? Oh no, when I hit reply it only goes to the person who wrote to me… sorry.”

I find this refusal to agree on a common messenger that is also suitable for groups somewhat unpleasant; I would also reinstall Briar or any other messenger if I knew anyone who used them.

Today a “group chat” with the name of our trio suddenly appears on my cell phone while texting me. Apparently E set it up. A group chat? In SMS? I don’t know that yet, I’ll do a quick google search: Apparently there’s been a successor to SMS called RCS for a long time, and it’s probably being used more and more. It’s included by default in newer Android phones, but whether it’s always enabled is anyone’s guess.

And this RCS can do a lot that SMS couldn’t do before! Also group chats!

Although RCS has probably been around for a long time, Google shows me a lot of new articles on relevant computer sites etc. about it. Apple also wants to enable RCS soon. Maybe I’m experiencing a revival of texting, especially in groups that can’t agree on other messengers.
