Joost Klein, the artist selected for the Netherlands, will not perform in the final following an accident which occurred after his performance in the semi-final on 9 May. According to the official statement, the Swedish police are conducting investigations relating to a complaint filed by a female member of the crew. Several unconfirmed rumors claim that the woman in question is a Swedish Eurovision photographer. Pending the results of the investigation, Klein’s participation was deemed inappropriate.

The statement does not specify the nature of the incident that led to the disqualification of the Netherlands representative, but underlines that no other artists or delegates were involved.

“We would like to clarify that, contrary to some media reports and speculation on social media, this incident did not involve any other artist or member of the delegation. We maintain a zero tolerance policy towards inappropriate behavior at our event and are committed to providing a safe and secure working environment for all Competition staff. In light of this, Joost Klein’s behavior towards a team member is considered contrary to the rules of the Competition”

A necessary clarification, given that in recent hours there had been rumors of another incident between Klein himself and Eden Golan (singer from Israel).

According to rumors – not officially confirmed – the two artists had some arguments backstage and, during a press conference, Klein went so far as to cover his head with the flag of the Netherlands during a speech by Eden Golan, in the form of dissent towards Israel. During the same press conference he had teased the reticence of the EBU to address the political issue regarding Israel’s presence at the demonstration.

Joost Klein – with his song European Pope – was considered one of the favorites to win the competition.
