Mercedes 300 TE 6.0 AMG āThe Malletā Station Wagon Up for Auction
Before Audi and BMW introduced their high-performance station wagons, AMGās North American division was already developing their own cutting-edge model. The unique Mercedes-Benz 300 TE 6.0 AMG, also known as āThe Mallet,ā is currently up for auction on RM Sothebyās website.
Commissioned by AMG North America founder Richard Buxbaum in 1987, this one-of-a-kind station wagon features a powerful 6.0-liter V8 engine with 32V technology, producing an impressive 375 horsepower. Dubbed āThe Hammerā at the time, this super AMG station wagon gained media attention for its performance capabilities.
Despite initial concerns about the high price of the vehicle limiting potential buyers, Buxbaum and his team decided to create a more affordable version by developing the Mercedes 300 TE 6.0 AMG prototype. Equipped with a V8 engine delivering 310 horsepower, wider fenders, 16-inch AMG monoblock wheels, and custom interior features, this unique prototype was well-received by automotive publications.
Although the production plans for the Mercedes 300 TE 6.0 AMG never came to fruition, the āThe Malletā prototype remains a rare and significant piece of AMG history. With an estimated auction price of $300,000 to $400,000, this exceptional station wagon is sure to attract collectors and enthusiasts alike.
