The Japanese term “Yandere” has spread through anime, manga and visual novels and is now a common description for certain character types outside of Japanese pop culture. But what does Yandere actually mean?
Meaning of Yandere
The term Yandere describes an archetype or character type in Japanese pop culture and is usually seen as the exact opposite of “Tsundere”. In video games, anime and manga, female characters are usually described in this way problematic obsession for her crush. At first there are often a lot loving and warm-hearted peoplebut over time they take on psychostic traits. The behavior often culminates in violence towards rivals, people who want to harm the crush or themselves or even the love of their life.
The word is made up of two terms: The first is “Yanderu” (sick), was ins Deutsche übersetzt “be sick” is called. The second “Deredere” (デレデレ) stands for in context “in love”. Together, Yanderu and Deredere become Yandere, which brings the two character focuses together into a pathological infatuation.
Character examples
Yandere is probably one of the most popular Mikasa Ackerman aus „Attack on Titan“, Stop Four from “Death Note” or Himiko Toga aus „My Hero Academia“.
But you can also find the character type outside of Japanese works. You could do that too, for example Gaston from Beauty and the Beast as a yandere because he puts his obsession with Belle above her father’s well-being and calls for the Beast’s murder. Likewise also fits Annie Wilkes from Stephen King’s “Misery” into the description. The fanatical fan follows the life of her favorite author and ends up keeping him prisoner when the chance arises.
Yandere Simulator
With “Yandere Simulator,” a video game has even been in development since 2014, which makes the problematic character traits the focus of the game. As a student, you try to keep rivals away from your own crush through sabotage, blackmail, other matchmaking or even murder.
