WhatsApp has rolled out a new update that is changing the way users interact with the popular messaging application. The platform has redesigned its tabs and icons, particularly on Android phones, to make navigation easier and more convenient for users.
The update, which has been gradually rolled out in recent weeks, features a new bottom navigation bar that replaces the traditional top bar. This change, inspired by the design of iPhone, aims to improve user experience by making it easier to access different features of the app with just one hand.
The four tabs that were previously located at the top of the screen – ‘Chats’, ‘Status’, ‘Calls’, and ‘Communities’ – have now been moved to the bottom of the interface, similar to iOS style. This reorganization does not add or remove any functions but simply rearranges the tools for easier access.
The ‘Chats’ tab now houses all conversations, including groups, archived chats, and hidden chats, making it the central hub of the application. ‘Statuses’ group together contacts’ statuses and broadcast channels, while ‘Communities’ provide quick access to various groups. The ‘Calls’ tab keeps a record of all calls and video calls made through WhatsApp.
While this update is currently only available for Android version 2.24.4.76 on Android 9, it is expected to be extended to all devices running the Android operating system in the near future.
In addition to these interface changes, WhatsApp has announced a major update in response to changes in European Union legislation, specifically the Digital Markets Act. This update will enable interoperability with other messaging apps, such as Telegram, Signal, and iMessage, allowing users to send and receive messages from different platforms while maintaining end-to-end encryption.
While this feature is optional for users, WhatsApp is obligated to offer it to comply with EU regulations. Failure to do so could result in fines or other consequences. The Digital Markets Act aims to regulate digital platforms to ensure fair conditions for both companies and users, as well as to promote openness and accessibility of digital services.
