YouTube wants to use paused videos for advertising

There isn’t enough advertising on YouTube yet – at least that’s what those responsible think. The video platform is currently experimenting with a way to show even more of it to users.

Anyone who pauses a video on YouTube in the future and does not have a paid premium subscription could potentially see an advertising clip. As a test, the platform has started to fill this gap with advertising.

For now, the “feature” can only be found in the TV app. Apparently the tests are so successful that YouTube is thinking about transferring the advertising to other platforms. In this case, success is of course not measured in customer satisfaction, but in money.

“In Q1, we saw strong response with the launch of a pilot for Pause Advertising on connected TVs, a new, non-interruptive advertising format that appears when users pause their organic content,” said Google Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler said in a meeting. This slot can be offered to advertising partners at top prices.

This type of advertising has the great advantage for users that it does not interrupt the videos arbitrarily. However, this statement only makes sense if there is no advertising for it elsewhere – and as far as we know, that is not the case. So users simply have to come to terms with an additional advertising slot.

Meanwhile, YouTube continues to diligently crack down on ad blocker users. Having already looked at browser extensions, the focus is now also on third-party apps for smartphones. The desired alternative, YouTube Premium, costs 12.99 euros per month.
