And earthquake of magnitude 5.7 was recorded off the Greek islets of Strofadi in the Ionian Sea (west), according to the Euro-Mediterranean Observatory. At the moment there is no news of victims or significant damage. Last week there was another 4.6 magnitude earthquake in the same area.
The tremor was recorded at 9.12am local time, 8.12am in Italy, at a depth of 20km “in a region where earthquakes are frequent”, said the seismologist Gerassimos Papadopoulos on public television Ert. According to Papadopoulos, the earthquake was followed by two tremors settling of magnitude 2.9 and 4.5.
The earthquake was also felt on the nearby island of Zakynthos, in the Peloponnese peninsula and in Puglia. Numerous reports, also through comments on social networks, from Brindisi, Lecce, Gallipoli, Taranto. The Athens Observatory had initially reported two successive earthquakes of magnitude 5.2 and 5.7, but Papadopoulos did not rule out “a system error” and reported a single earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale. The Strofades are made up of two islets, one uninhabited and the other which houses a monastery.
