Steel production at Siderúrgica Huachipato resumes following anti-dumping tariffs

The Chilean steel company, Siderúrgica Huachipato, located in the BíoBío region, has announced the resumption of its production following the decision of the Anti-Distortions Commission to establish provisional anti-dumping duties on steel imports from China. The commission set tariffs of 24.9% for Chinese steel bars and 33.5% for steel balls from the same country.

The company, owned by Compañía de Acero del Pacífico (CAP), expressed their commitment to ensuring the continuity of operations while the provisional tariffs are in force. In a statement, Huachipato stated that the commission’s measures will allow for fair competition and market balance.

Julio Bertrand, the president of the board of directors of Siderúrgica Huachipato, emphasized the importance of the decision, stating that it is good news for the national industry in Chile. He expressed his appreciation for the commission’s determination and highlighted the significance of eliminating distortions and ensuring a level playing field for national steel producers.

Workers at Huachipato welcomed the commission’s decision but announced that they will continue their mobilizations to advocate for the maintenance of the anti-dumping tariffs beyond the expiration date of September 9. The workers emphasized the need for long-term measures to support the industry and allow for recovery.

The Minister of Economy, Nicolás Grau, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the steel industry, stating that the Anti-Distortion Commission’s decision aligns with free trade agreements and the principles of the World Trade Organization. The measures aim to protect local jobs and ensure fair competition in the market.
