The action was carried out by the environmental protection collective “Riposte Alimentaire”, which at the end of January carried out a similar action in the Paris Louvre on the famous “Mona Lisa” (Gioconde) by Leonardo da Vinci.
The management of the museum in Lyon announced on Twitter that this afternoon Monet’s painting “Spring” was the subject of an act of vandalism and added that two female activists spilled soup on the protective glass of this masterpiece, painted in 1872.
“This spring will be the only one left for us if we do not react. What will our future artists paint? What will we dream about if there is no more spring?”, the activists said in front of the canvas in the museum, explaining their action, before the police took them into custody.
The museum management added that the museum will be closed to visitors tomorrow, in order to assess any possible damage to the canvas.
