Administrative elections in Turkey, no reconquest for Erdogan’s party: the opposition is ahead in Istanbul and Ankara

He had focused heavily on regaining control of the main cities of the Türkiyebut – according to what emerges from the first data released – the dream of the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan seems to be breaking. At administrative elections Turkey’s main opposition party – the Republican People’s Party (CHP) – looks set to win a Istanbulin the capital Ankara and also to Smyrna. An electoral test that is certainly not positive for Erdogan: his party, theAkpwould still be ahead of much of theCentral Anatoliahis stronghold.

With almost 65% of the votes counted, Imamoglu is leading in Istanbul with 50.2% of the votes and in the capital, Yavas.

With around 60% of the votes counted, the mayor in office Ekrem Imamogluof the CHP, is leading in Istanbul with the 50,2% of consensus. Turkey’s largest city and economic center was the main battlefield of the 70-year-old Turkish president: a city of 16 million inhabitants where he was born and raised and where he began his political career as mayor in 1994. Imamoglu’s challenger, Murat Kurumis stopped at 41%. Even the mayor of the capital Ankara, Mansur Yavaslooks set to retain his position with a comfortable majority, leading the race with the 58,5% of consensus, leaving Erdogan’s candidate al 33%, with 38% of the votes counted. The main opposition party is currently in the lead in 35 of the 81 provinces Turkish. The opposition is also ahead in Smyrnaacross the entire Aegean and Mediterranean coast while the pro-Kurdish party dominates in the south east. Erdogan’s party, however, maintains control over much of central Anatolia.

Already five years ago the CHP’s victory in Ankara and Istanbul had shattered Erdogan’s aura of invincibility. This year or so 61 million people, including more than one million first-time voters, were eligible to vote for all metropolitan municipalities, city and district mayors, and neighborhood governments. Voter turnout is traditionally high in Turkey, but this time the vote took place against the backdrop of a cost of living crisis.
