The Minister of Justice, Marta Cartabia, together with his counterparts from France, Spain and Luxembourg, sent a letter to the European Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders, on the crisis in Afghanistan. In fact, the four ministers want to make the community institutions aware of the risks of reprisals that could incur, after the advent of the Taliban, especially the legal practitioners, who have collaborated with the international community to build the rule of law.

Over the past twenty years, Italy has contributed to the training and promotion of the independence of judges, and to the dissemination of a legal culture based on respect for the rights of the person. Particular concern is expressed for women judges and lawyers, who risk paying with their lives for having contributed to the defense of human rights and fundamental freedoms. “The ministers – continues the note – ask the EU commissioner to be able to discuss quickly any joint initiatives, to continue to evacuate and then welcome – despite the precipitate of events – the threatened professionals, already partially identified in these hectic days”.
At the same time, the four holders of justice are launching an appeal, for a collection as of now of evidence of the violations of fundamental freedoms that should be committed by the Taliban against Afghan judges, prosecutors and lawyers.
