Former young Serbian national team player Aleksandar Čavrić (29) caused a real storm in Slovakia after he refused to play for this national team. Čavrić played for Slovan from Bratislava for seven and a half years and finally got Slovak papers, and after the new coach Francesco Calcona invited him to the national team this March – he decided to just thank them.

It is interesting that Čavrić really tried to get a Slovakian passport, he said that he wanted to play this summer at the European Championship in Germany, only to have everything jeopardized at one point because the bureaucracy prolonged the entire process. In the end, when the Football Association of Slovakia managed to do everything and when they agreed the necessary paperwork with FIFA and UEFA standards, Čavrić was invited for the March matches against Austria and Norway and just said “no”.

“Cavrić was given the opportunity to come in March. He didn’t come. We continue with those players who are here. They deserve respect. The footballers who answered the call are proud of the Slovak colors. Those guys have proven themselves to me. The professional staff and the Federation will decide who will come to play for the national team, not the footballers”Calcona is furious.

The president of the Football Association of Slovakia, Jan Kovačik, did not want to speculate that this means that Čavrić might in the future receive a call-up from Pixi to the Serbian national team, adding that they did everything for him to get a Slovak passport, according to his own wish. Because of everything that happened, he is now very angry with him:

The selector draws up the list himself. During the phone conversation with Čavrić, I got a different impression, I didn’t think he didn’t want to come to the March gathering. Among other things, I wanted to draw his attention to the fact that we gave him the chance to become a national team player as early as legally possible. If it wasn’t like that, the question would be raised why we helped him get Slovak citizenship”.

Let us remind you that the native of Zrenjanin grew up in Banat, then played for OFK Belgrade, and has been abroad since 2014 when he moved to Genk. He was also a member of Danish Aarhus, while he has been in Slovan since 2016. In winter, the club loaned him to Japan, so he will remain at Kashima Antlers until the end of the calendar year.

According to some information, Čavrić decided to turn down the head coach of Slovakia precisely because of going to “distant Japan”, since playing in the European tournament would cost him a place in the team because he would miss a large number of matches.
