It was a tough ice-covered giant slalom course in Schladming. World Cup leader Marco Odermatt made perhaps his first big mistake this season in the 1st half and was about to break on a classic inner ski. He drove a better final lap, and despite being close to one second behind the lead, he took his fifth giant slalom victory of the season.
The Swiss was 5/100ths of a second ahead of the Austrian Manuel Feller, who led after the 1st lap.
Alexander Steen Olsen was number six after the 1st round and managed to advance to fourth place as the best Norwegian. He was 33/100 behind Odermatt. Last year he broke through with his fourth place in Schladming.
Henrik Kristoffersen was close to winning after 3rd place in the 1st round, but in the final it just didn’t go fast enough, and he fell to 9th place, 1.26 behind Odermatt.
Timon Haugan delivered the goods from a late starting number (50) and finished in 16th place after the first lap. He didn’t quite make it in the final, but still advanced up to 10th place in the end
Atle Lie McGrath was the first out of the Norwegians in the final round from her 20th place. He drove solidly, but made a small mistake in the finish line which cost him a greater advancement than to 16th place.
– It probably took half a second for that mistake, but it wasn’t quite my day, McGrath told TV 2.
Rasmus Windingstad had 17th place after the 1st lap, but hooked his hand in a gate and drove out with obvious pain in his right arm.
Fredrik Møller finished 3.06 seconds behind, and it didn’t last until the 2nd lap for the ill alpinist.
