According to Kyodo News, Japan’s Kansai Electric Power Company restarted the Mihama Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3 nuclear reactor in Mihama Town, Fukui Prefecture on the 23rd. The reactor has been in operation for more than 40 years. This is the first case in Japan that the operating time of a nuclear reactor has achieved the current stipulation of “40 years of operation in principle, with a maximum extension of 20 years.”
Ten years have passed since the nuclear leakage accident at the Tokyo Electric Power Company’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Japanese nuclear power plants have ushered in the so-called “60-year operation era.” Mihama Unit 3 restarted again after a lapse of about 10 years. As the anti-terrorism facilities required by the nuclear power plant have not yet been completed, the nuclear reactor of Mihama Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3 will stop operation before the set deadline of October 23. The operation time is about 4 months.
While advocating the flexible use of decarbonized power sources, the Japanese government strives to reduce the degree of dependence on nuclear power. Kyodo News Agency commented that under the background that it is difficult to achieve new nuclear power plants, the restart of old nuclear power plants may affect the operation plans of other nuclear power plants.
