The President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelensky, has called on the international community to pressure Russia to return control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant to Ukraine. Zelensky warned of the potential for another disaster like the one at Chernobyl if the plant remains under Russian control. He highlighted the international duty to prevent radiological disasters and emphasized the urgency of freeing the plant from Russian “terrorists.”
The Zaporizhzhia plant has been under Russian control since March 4, 2022, and has not generated electricity since September 11, 2022. Despite the presence of a mission from the International Atomic Energy Agency, attacks at the site have continued, with accusations flying between Russian and Ukrainian forces.
Meanwhile, North American Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to Beijing culminated in a meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Blinken expressed concerns about China’s support for Russia in its invasion of Ukraine, stating that Moscow’s actions would be more challenging without Beijing’s backing. He also urged China to crack down on fentanyl trafficking and addressed tensions with the Philippines, reaffirming the United States‘ defense commitments to the country.
Additionally, Blinken announced future discussions on artificial intelligence between the United States and China, aimed at addressing security concerns and managing risks associated with advanced AI technology. The meetings are set to take place in the coming weeks.
