May 7, 2024. From the setting of Hall of the Columns of Ca’ Giustinian to Venice, Carlo Ratti, in Italian and English he presents the themes of his Biennial. First, the title: Intelligent underlining the apocryphal root of the Latin ending which makes the term plural, collective, inclusive and valid for both Italian and English.
The intelligent in fact they will be choirs, as well as the architecture itselfe declined in their different meaningsthe. They will determine the sections of the Architecture Biennial that will take place introductory theme Venezia that gives the fragile city par excellence will transformin the vision of the curator of the new Biennale, on the test bench of the temporary and permanent solutions that the architects will propose.
L’built environment as responsible for80% of air emissions will be put to the test of transformation through new routes for the future, suggesting a range of solutions to the most pressing problems of the present. A large collection of experimental project proposals will be put together, responding to a definition of “intelligence“based primarily on the ability to adapt to the environment thanks also to its widespread meanings, namely: natural, artificial and collective.
In Venice to save the planet?
The 19. International Architecture Exhibition will be dedicated tobuilt environment and the numerous disciplines that give it shape. Architecture will be at the center of this constellationand will be integrated with art, engineering, biology, and with them science in a broad sense, connecting each of them to the materiality of urban space. All in service of that theme, which is the challenge of our time, and which it is no longer transition but it is now: CLIMATE CHANGE.
This year, explained the curator, the Italian Pavilion will be closed for restoration and will also not be available in 2025, but the philosophy that will guide the Exhibition has captured, to quote Gian Battista Vico, this ordeal as an opportunity and that’s why the Italian Pavilion will be spread across the city of Venicenot only at the Giardini and the Arsenale but the city itself as open laboratorya theme that brings Carlo Ratti back to his first reflections on one shared planning along the lines ofopen work by Umberto Eco.
The methodology will be characterized by four key concepts such as: Transdisciplinarity, Living Laboratory, Collection of Ideas and Circularity Protocol. Furthermore, with similarity to the 14th International Architecture Exhibition (2014), the current curatorship will try to reintroduce among the National Pavilions a degree of coordination and coherence with the theme of the main International Exhibition. Participating countries will be encouraged to engage with the topic “One place, one solution” to highlight that unity, even in epochal challenges such as climate change, is strength.
The architect, all architectsthey will be in this one Biennial laboratory come “mutagenic agents” capable of triggering change, finding ideas and discussing solutions that may fail but also opening up ways to address that original theme which defines the very meaning of architecture: that is, that of rprotect human beings from adverse natural elements.
Carlo Ratti dedicates his Biennial to Italo Rota, who recently passed away, with whom this adventure began. The curators will continue to carry forward his ideas.
THE SECTIONS OF THE EXHIBITION
Venezia: focus on the various intelligences that have allowed and allow a Venice to be itself and survive.
Natural intelligence: where the notion of architecture will be investigated in its meaning implementation of nature to guide one’s action e bring vegetation back to the heart of our cities.
Artificial intelligence: where the networks of connections and sensors that connect our metropolises can to mitigate the environmental impact of urban development.

A rallying call for the global community of professionals, scientists, scholars, activists and others.
For the first time, everyone will be protagonists within the 19th International Architecture Exhibition, the Curator Carlo Ratti opens a space for the collection of ideas. Following the principle that every idea is valid in times like these to build an exhibition that sheds light diversity and plurality of thoughtor. Each contribution will be evaluated by the Curator for possible inclusion in the International Exhibition or in the broader curatorial program.
