Alexander Bommes began his career as a handball player
Alexander Bommes was already active in his youth for the handball club TSV Altenholz, where he advanced to the second division team in 1996. In 1999 he moved to the first division club TSV Bayer Dormagen, and in 2001 he moved to VfL Gummersbach. With his return to TSV Altenholz in 2003, things came full circle, this time Bommes became the Kiel suburban club’s main goalscorer.
In the 2005/06 season he even became top scorer in the 2nd Bundesliga North before Alexander Bommes ended his handball career in 2007.
Law degree and internship
The presenter did not rely on a career as a professional athlete, but studied law in Kiel and Cologne from 1997 to 2005. As he said in an interview with “juraexamen.info” revealed, he completed his studies with the first state examination, which “was in jeopardy after the written exam.” In the oral exam he got 48 points “and then drank a similar number of beers.” He has not passed the second state law examination.
After his exams, Alexander Bommes pushed forward his TV career with a traineeship at NDR. From autumn 2007 he moderated the “Hamburg Journal”, but was also active as a sports reporter at the same time and, among other things, toured the NDR “Sportclub”.
Breakthrough with the “Sportschau”
Alexander Bommes has now become an integral part of the “Sportschau”. At first he only moderated the Sunday edition, but since 2015 he has also been in front of the camera for the “Sportschau” on Saturday. Here he alternates with Esther Sedlaczek and Lea Wagner.

TV break due to illness
As of November 2022, Alexander Bommes was out for several months: He had to struggle with “a series of infections,” according to the official explanation. In February 2023, ARD announced the presenter’s comeback: “The ‘Sportschau’ is currently planning to feature Alexander Bommes again from March.”

“Asked – Hunted”: Mourning for Klaus Otto Nagorsnik
Over the years, Alexander Bommes has also made a name for himself as a presenter of quiz shows. While he gave up the “NDR quiz show” again after a short time, “Gefragt – Gejagt” has been extremely successful in the ARD program since its TV debut in 2012.
Here, in each show, a group of four candidates competes against a quiz expert or “hunter”. The popular hunter Klaus Otto Nagorsnik died unexpectedly on April 22, 2024, to which moderator Bommes also reacted with concern. He was quoted in an ARD press release as saying, “With Klaus Otto Nagorsnik, we are losing a role model of authenticity, education and joy of life.”
