In Guayaquil, a city in the western part of Ecuador, nine people were killed in an armed attack and ten others were injured. The attack was carried out on Saturday evening, but the news was released on Sunday by the police: according to the authorities’ reconstruction, around 7pm a group of armed men entered a car on a pedestrian street, the passengers got out of the vehicle and started shooting at people present.
Ecuador is one of the most violent countries in South America, where numerous criminal groups are active. For now, however, the attack has not been claimed. Last Friday another five people were killed in the coastal province of Manabi: they were tourists and had been kidnapped days earlier, second the police during a conflict between criminal groups to control drug trafficking.
