Atlético Madrid eliminated last year’s finalists Inter Milan and reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Coach Diego Simeone’s team beat the Italian football club 3-2 on penalties. After regular time and subsequent extra time, the score was 2-1 (1-1, 0-0) for Atlético. Inter won the first leg 1-0.
Antoine Griezmann (35th minute) and Memphis Depay (87th) scored for the hosts during regular time. Federico Dimarco (33rd) initially gave Inter the lead. In the penalty shootout, Atlético goalkeeper Jan Oblak saved two penalty kicks from the guests, and Inter captain Lautaro Martinez also shot over. The draw for the quarter-final games will now take place this Friday without the Italians.

Atlético started the game better. After the first leg defeat, the Spaniards had to present – and they tried. However, they initially didn’t create any top chances because Inter defended cleverly.
The guests also scored the opening goal. After a nice combination attack, the ball came to Dimarco in the center, who pushed in against Oblak’s direction. Just two minutes later, after an unfortunate defensive move in the penalty area, Griezmann got the ball and shot it into the goal against the direction of Inter keeper Yann Sommer.
It remained an entertaining game even after the break. This time Inter initially came out better, but the hosts also remained dangerous. In the third minute of added time, substitute Rodrido Riquelme had a great chance to score the winning goal, but shot over from close range in front of Sommer. It then went into extra time and then into a penalty shootout. With the better ending for Madrid.
