ATP Ranking, will Sinner lose the Montpellier points? A particular aspect of the ranking

This week, as is known, the ATP 250 in Montpellier will be held. The 2023 champion was Jannik Sinner. The South Tyrolean, however, had already decided from the outset not to play the transalpine tournament. The reason is very simple: it is played in the week following the Australian Open.

And, normally, the top 10 prefer to skip a lap on such an occasion. Or, more generally, those who have moved on in Australia. This is why the exception is Holger Rune: the Dane, since he stopped in the second round, asked for and obtained a wild card.

Obviously this is not the case with Sinner, who will not be there. This, however, to date has no repercussions on the ATP ranking. This is because the 250 points to defend are not per tournament, but per week. In this, in practice, nothing “expires” to the new member of the club of Slam champions.

However, it could happen if he decides to skip the ATP 250 in Marseille next week. This, in fact, is still in the South Tyrolean’s official schedule, but he could decide to give it up and only play the ATP 500 in Rotterdam before the Sunshine Double, the US Spring Masters 1000 in Indian Wells and Miami.

If he were to give up, then the 250 points would go away from Jannik’s share of the ranking, which is currently at 8310. Who, however, rightly prefers to think about how to manage himself. And in this, together with his team, his choices have tended to reward him for some time now.
