Second division football team Hamburger SV is following in the footsteps of itself. As has so often been the case, HSV seems to have lost promotion this spring. On Friday evening, the North Germans lost 0:2 (0:1) at Fortuna Düsseldorf. It was the second defeat in the third game under new coach Steffen Baumgart. There were whistles from our own fans.

Looking back, they had imagined it all very differently, much more beautifully. The HSV fans made no secret of this a few minutes after the final whistle in Düsseldorf. On February 20th, Hamburger SV introduced Baumgart as the new coach and successor to Tim Walter. There were so many hopes associated with the Rostock native, there was a real spirit of optimism on the Elbe.

And now, on this dreary evening of March 8th – the supporters whistled at their team. This was just a caricature of a candidate for promotion.

“There are reasons other than mentality.”

HSV captain Sebastian Schonlau

A visual predominance over long stretches of the game with all due respect. But so much was missing: creativity, energy, ball security, determination and, yes, that absolute will. HSV captain Sebastian Schonlau saw it differently in an interview with NDR. “You certainly can’t deny our will. Today, I think there are reasons other than mentality.”

The defense chief understood that there were whistles from his own fans. “After last week we certainly wanted to achieve a different result. That’s why it’s okay that the fans did that,” said Schonlau.

Heyer only sees yellow-red 37 minutes after being substituted on

A week earlier there had been a 1:2 draw at home against ten Osnabrück players. Under Baumgart it was only enough to achieve a difficult 1-0 win in the first game against newly promoted SV Elversberg. In Düsseldorf, Hamburg weakened themselves – Moritz Heyer saw a yellow-red card just 37 minutes after being substituted on (51′). “We didn’t manage to create clear, really dangerous chances to score. And if you start the second half with a yellow-red card, it doesn’t get any easier,” noted Schonlau.

HSV is in danger of slipping to fourth place

In the table, the Fortunen moved up to one point behind HSV in third place on matchday 25 with 40 points. Leaders FC St. Pauli could move ahead of their city rivals to ten points with a home win against Hertha BSC on Sunday (1:30 p.m., in the live center on >).

“There is no question that two defeats hurt. But we are still in third place – we have to be pushed out first,” said Schonlau defiantly. “Until that happens, no one will bury their head in the sand.”

He must certainly have considered it over a longer period of time. In the short term, this can be done very well and quickly. This would happen if Hannover 96 won against SV Wehen Wiesbaden, Hamburg’s upcoming opponent, on Saturday (1 p.m., in the live center at >).

Schonlau spread optimism for the further promotion race: “We will see this thing through to the end, and we will continue to believe in it. We have a new coach, he will continue to give us the energy and confidence. And then we’ll see what happens next weekend.”

Meanwhile, Baumgart relentlessly criticized himself in an interview with ARD: “The same problems existed before I was in office. I actually ran to solve these problems. And now I have to say clearly that I haven’t solved them. I have to Of course, question things. I think that’s normal. And everyone who knows me knows that it’s all about the team, about the togetherness.”

Hamburg falls behind again early on

Things started just as badly for Hamburg in Düsseldorf as they did against Osnabrück. Last Sunday, the opponent’s first opportunity meant that they were able to celebrate straight away. VfL did this after six minutes, in Düsseldorf this was the case after twelve minutes – it was also the first chance for Fortuna.

Erik Johanesson initiated this with a soulful through ball to Christos Tzolis. The Greek picked up the pace on the left wing, passed sharply at the height of the central penalty area – through the legs of HSV defender Ignace van der Brempt – into the middle, where Felix Klaus took advantage of the space and shot in low to make it 1-0.

And as if this wasn’t unpleasant enough, Noah Katterbach, who was too far away from the goalscorer, was also injured in this scene. After Miro Muheim, the next left-back was out. Heyer came into the game for him (14th). HSV only had one chance to score: Robert Glatzel had it – his low shot went just past the post (30th).

After the sending off, the score was 0:2

Six minutes after the restart, the next setback for the Baumgart team: Heyer, who had already been warned, stepped on Klaus’ sole on the outer ankle of his right foot. The yellow-red card was fully justified. For “Joker” Heyer the game was over again.

Those HSV fans who were hoping for a defiant reaction from their team were quickly disappointed. After a bad pass from Jonas Meffert, Fortuna professional Dennis Jastrzembski played the ball diagonally to Tzolis, who kept his nerve in the duel with HSV goalkeeper Matheo Raab and beat him with a low shot (63′).

Baumgart tried everything again in the 72nd minute, bringing on Anssi Suhonen, Levin Öztunali and Andras Nemeth for Meffert, van der Brempt and Immanuel Pherai. But there was no effect. Hamburg simply continued to pose no goal threat. Ultimately, the North Germans had to thank goalkeeper Raab that the defeat was not even more significant. With strong saves he thwarted further chances for Jastrzembski (80th) and Tzolis (90th + 3rd).

The final whistle almost seemed like a relief for HSV and its supporters. The latter then whistled themselves as their favorites made their way towards the guest block.
