Bia Haddad Maia wins in Indian Wells WTA debut

This Saturday morning saw great tennis performances from Brazilians. Bia Haddad Maia broke the sequence of early eliminations by beating Slovakian Rebecca Sramkova, in the debut of the WTA 1000 in Indian Wells, by 2 sets to 0.

Thiago Wild reached the third phase of the tournament, in the men’s category, by beating the Russian Karen Khachanov, 15th in the world rankings, 2-0. In the doubles, Luisa Stefani and the Dutch Demi Schuurs beat the Romanian Sorana Crista and the Croatian Donna Vekic also 2-0.

Bia was coming off three consecutive eliminations in debuts. She fell in the first round of the WTA 1000 in Doha and Dubai, and the 500 in San Diego. This Saturday, she turned things around by defeating Rebecca Sramkova, 127th in the WTA rankings, by 7/5 and 6/2, in 1h55 of the match.

In the next phase, the Brazilian will face Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (24th), who defeated Spanish Nuria Parrizas Diaz by 2 sets to 0, partials of 6/3 and 6/1. Bia does not have a good record against her opponent, having been defeated in the last two clashes.

Bia Haddad Maia started very well in this Saturday’s match and took a 4/1 lead. However, she suffered fluctuations and let her opponent react. The duel was tied at 5/5, until the Brazilian’s rhythm returned and she managed to confirm the victory by 7/5.

In the second set, Bia was extremely aggressive, didn’t let Sramkova impose herself and won the classification easily, with two breaks and winning five consecutive games. The victory was 6/1.

Thiago Wild won his fourth victory in the Indian Wells Masters 1000, two of which were in the qualifying stages. This Saturday, he defeated the Brazilian tennis player Karen Khachanov (6/1; 7/5), in 1h22min of the match.

“I’m happy, satisfied with my game. We have been working hard for this, to play well and achieve results. You have to believe and have confidence, but without work you won’t get anywhere. I understand that it is daily, mental and physical progress. Every day, every game we talk and see what we can make better. I’m going to rest and then think about the next game”, said Thiago.

Wild will face Hungarian Fabián Maroszán in the third phase, who defeated Chilean Nicolás Jarry 2-1, with a comeback score of 3/6, 7/5 and 6/4.

The Brazilian had a very calm first set. He opened 5/0 with just 20 minutes of play and closed, without any fear, 6/1. In the second set, Khachanov reacted, fought point by point, but ended up defeated by 7/5.

Closing the day, Brazilian Luisa Stefani and Dutch Demi Schuurs achieved a great victory in the doubles and advanced to the round of 16 by defeating Romanian Sorana Cirstea and Croatian Donna Vekic 6/2 and 6/4. Together, they won the WTA 1000 in Doha, but were coming from elimination in Dubai.

The match was originally going to be played on Thursday, but ended up being moved due to rain. On the court, they didn’t give their rivals the slightest chance and confirmed their favoritism. In the next phase, the pair will face the winners of the clash between Anna Kalinskaya and Veronika Kudermetova and the Norwegian Ulrikke Eikeri and the Chinese Hanyu Guo.
