Biden and Trump win ‘Super Tuesday’ and Nikki Haley gives up

Joe Biden, current president of the United States, and Donald Trump are virtual candidates for their parties in the elections for the White House after ‘Super Tuesday’, when several states held simultaneous previews. Elections in the country take place in November.

For the Democratic Party, Biden won in all states where the caucuses took place. On the Republican side, Trump only lost in the state of Vermont, in the northeast of the USA, where Nikki Haley emerged victorious. However, Haley accumulated defeats and announced this Wednesday (6) her withdrawal from the candidacy.

Giorgio Romano, professor of International Relations at the Federal University of ABC (UFABC), analyzed the results of ‘Super Tuesday’ in an interview with Central Brazil this Wednesday (6). He states that the results were as expected. However, the state where former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley got the most votes draws the attention of the Republican Party.

“If there was any doubt, the result yesterday showed that Trump rules the party, that the party is with Trump today. A small part still dreams of the old, more institutional Republican Party. But Trump, who achieved it, with populism, with the capital of communication, mobilizing dissatisfaction, based on real facts or fake news. It is political engineering, it is a phenomenon that is here, for now, to stay”, says Giorgio, who is also a member of the Brazilian Foreign Policy and International Insertion Observatory (OPEB ).

“The result yesterday wasn’t exactly a surprise, neither on one side nor on the other. The trend was already clear. But, in the case of the Republicans, they were keeping a close eye on where Nikki Haley would get votes. She even won in a small state, but it doesn’t produce the necessary volume. The question for Republicans and Trump is whether these people who voted for Nikki Haley will stay at home in November, in the presidential elections, or even if some will vote for Biden”, he reflects the teacher.

Declaring her withdrawal from the presidential race, Haley thanked supporters and said that the goal of her candidacy was to make “Americans have their voices heard.” The Republican did not declare support for Trump, which goes against party tradition.

In a speech after winning in almost all states on ‘Super Tuesday’, Donald Trump attacked immigrants, which could strengthen his candidacy against Biden, explains the UFABC professor.

“It’s an appeal that also resonates with the base of the Democratic Party. It’s a very hot issue that has managed to translate into the border problem, into a public security problem… They’re campaigning now saying ‘all states have borders’. Or In other words, it is an impact of migration in the sense of all states, a national problem, no longer about migration, but about security. National security, including. And there is a certain insecurity about the future. People will see a brighter future in front. And this issue of migration, when presented and manipulated in this way, manages to mobilize votes”, says Giorgio.

“Trump has this line: migration and inflation. And Biden has a lot of difficulty achieving an alternative discourse on the issue of migration. So, on this issue of migration, he will certainly lose points. The question is whether he will be able to reverse this negative image in relation to the economy”, he continues.
