An ambitious plan to bring connectivity to every corner of Italy

While the mobile signal in the heart of Rome experiences difficulties due to obsolete and congested networks, the Italy 5G Plan and the Italy 1 Giga Plan kick off in 2024 to provide reliable, modern and future-ready connections in every region of the country.

For this reason, UNCEM reminds us, we must not back down from an initiative with a clear objective: to bring 4G and 5G to mountain areas and small municipalitiesreducing the digital divide and guaranteeing all citizens a quality connection.

A Better Mobile Network for all of Italy

Quality mobile signal has become a basic necessity in everyday life. The center of Rome could currently be an example of the challenges that obsolete networks face. To address this problem on a national scale, the National Union of Municipalities, Communities, Mountain Bodies (Uncem) is committed to collaborating with the government, ministries and departments of the Presidency of the Council to improve connectivity throughout Italy.

The Italy 5G Plan aims to implement 4G and 5G mobile networks in mountainous, rural and internal areas of the country. This effort will not only address current shortcomings, but will also prepare the ground for 6G, the next generation of connectivity, ensuring an even more advanced digital future.

A Bottom-Up Approach: Innovation Starts from the Territories

The president of Uncem, Marco Bussone, underlines the importance of starting from the territories to reduce digital divides. Attention is not only paid to urban areas, but above all to mountain regions and small municipalities, often neglected by technological advances.

The project proposes a complete solution: ultra-wide fixed connectivity and 5G mobile networks, to reach even those places where private companies might hesitate to invest. A successful model is highlighted in Emilia-Romagna, where investments led by Uncem and Lepida, the information society of the Emilia-Romagna Region, are bringing tangible results.

Investing to Unite the Country

The tunnels of the 4G high-speed railway line – which connects the cities of Turin, Milan, Florence and Salerno – are just the beginning. The goal is to unite the country by reducing digital disparities and creating a digital infrastructure that is inclusive and accessible to all. The National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and cohesion funds play a crucial role in financing this digital transformation.

Innovation cannot wait, and 2024 promises to be a key year to ensure that all Italian citizens, regardless of their location, can fully benefit from the opportunities offered by advanced connectivity. Italy is preparing to make the great digital leap, starting from its mountain roots to embrace the entire country.
