Holstein Kiel is still waiting for its first win of the new year and has once again dropped points in the Bundesliga promotion battle. After two opening defeats, the 2nd league autumn champions only managed a 1-1 (1-0) draw at 1. FC Magdeburg on Friday evening.

There were only a few seconds left for the first victory. Coach Marcel Rapp’s team led in Magdeburg until the fifth minute of stoppage time. Then Emir Kuhinja was there and scored the equalizer for the hosts – fully deserved.

“Bitter, but if you look at the game soberly, the 1-1 draw was deserved.”

After taking the lead through Timo Becker (27th) and a strong first half, Kiel had gradually lost ground and was only happily leading for long stretches of the second half.

Weiner: “We have to stop the negative trend”

“We were too deep behind. It was a bit of a wait for the goal,” said Kiel goalkeeper Timon Weiner, who saved a hand penalty. “The fact that it falls so late in stoppage time is simply brutally bitter.” He would still like to take the point with him, said Weiner, who was already looking ahead to the next home game against Schalke 04: “Next week we have to try to stop this small negative trend.”

Becker makes Holstein Kiel cheer

Things had started so well for the Rapp team. The biggest compliment for Kiel’s performance in the first 45 minutes came from the audience. The Magdeburg audience whistled at their team at halftime. The displeasure was understandable, after all, ex-HSV coach Christian Titz’s team had achieved little or nothing offensively.

But that was also due to the tactically mature performance of the “Storks”. Rapp’s team cleverly blocked the passing lanes and defended consistently. And Becker put the ball in the hosts’ goal on the third attempt – 1-0 for Kiel. If Joshua Mees (6th) had had his 100% chance beforehand, it would have been a perfect KSV half.

Bouncy balls fly – Weiner saves a hand penalty

Thanks to the DFL investor protest, all professionals were allowed to collect bouncy balls from the pitch shortly after the restart. But that didn’t help the hosts in front of the Kiel goal. In addition, KSV keeper Timon Weiner was wide awake when he parried a weak hand penalty (according to video evidence) from Luc Castaignos (55th). Previously, Marco Komenda had his arm much too high when defending against Alexander Nollenberger.

Magdeburg pressed for the equalizer and the guests increasingly lost their line. Nicolai Remberg’s hair tips ensured that Nollenberg’s great chance landed on the crossbar instead of in the Holstein goal (62nd).

Rapp substituted defenders en masse to keep the score 1-0 against the increasingly dominant Magdeburg team. The wall tactic almost worked until substitute Kuhinja came onto the scene and gave the “Storks” a draw in stoppage time that probably felt like a defeat.
