Great superiority – little that is compelling
In the first half, Leipzig set the tone from the start, had 65 percent of the ball, and looked for an open door in the bus that Mainz had parked in their penalty area. Largely unsuccessful – due to inaccuracies and an overly complicated style of play, there were hardly any compelling chances despite the great superiority. Willi Orban had the best, whose header hit the left post (12th).
Hair pulling
After the break, RB stepped it up a notch, applied significantly more pressure – and at times had great chances every minute. But with Baumgartner and Sesko’s “big things” outgrew FSV keeper Zentner (59th/86th). And then there was the already mentioned scene in the 61st minute, when Xavi was cleared on the penalty area line but the VAR did not intervene.
Game almost turned upside down
Things got really dramatic in the last few minutes: Mainz’s Barreiro shot from 4 meters (!) past the Leipzig box and thus past the sensation (88th). But the final point was set by referee Frank Willenborg, who wasn’t always convincing. He didn’t punish Schlager’s kick against Burkardt with a penalty in the 90th minute, even after watching the video images. That saved RB’s measly point in the end.
