The huge sensation has been achieved: In a season in which Borussia Dortmund has gone from disappointment to disappointment in the Bundesliga, the black and yellow are in the final of the Champions League!

The crucial scenes take place shortly after the break. After a sharp cross from Kylian Mbappé, which is deflected twice, Warren Zaïre-Emery has the best chance of the game so far at the far post. The 18-year-old – perhaps a little surprised – puts the shot on the post. It is a wasted opportunity that Parisians mourn just a few moments later.

With a corner on the other side, Mats Hummels cleverly creates space in the penalty area and heads in to make it 1-0. BVB leads the overall score 2-0 against the favored French after 50 minutes of the second leg. Now the main thing is to defend it and get it over time.

It was a departure from the plan with which BVB started the game. These were: Continue in the same way as in the first leg last Wednesday. Coach Edin Terzic sent the same eleven men to the second leg in Paris as in the 1-0 win at the Westfalenstadion. At PSG, however, Gonçalo Ramos moved into the starting lineup for Bradley Barcola, who was ineffective in the first leg. Kylian Mbappé made room for the Portuguese in the center of the attack and moved to his preferred position on the left wing. Beraldo also replaced Lucas Hernandez in central defense, as he did the previous week, after the 28-year-old suffered a torn cruciate ligament.

However, the castling in the attack didn’t really bear fruit in the first half. Although PSG started well, Dortmund felt more and more comfortable from the 10th minute onwards, became more courageous and dared to enter the opponent’s half more and more. The nervousness that has gone away is also noticeable in that BVB wants to combine in the penalty area like last week and is more decisive than Paris in this phase.

Nevertheless, it was the French who almost had a great chance after a good half hour. After a pass from Fabian Ruiz, Mats Hummels, as so often in recent weeks, was in exactly the right place at the right moment and prevented Kylian Mbappé from finishing. The veteran’s tackle leads to a direct counterattack in which the fast Karim Adeyemi starts, but allows himself to be pushed away a bit and does not make the best of the situation. Nevertheless, it takes a strong save from Gianluigi Donnarumma to prevent the first goal of the game. Five minutes after the restart, the Italian is powerless.

The guests manage to defend their lead after Hummels’ lucky header with a good deal of indifference. PSG has some good chances, but the ball just doesn’t want to go into the goal. A good ten minutes after Hummels’ goal, Ramos finishes but shoots over the goal. Shortly afterwards, Nuno Mendes failed to hit the post with a long-range shot like Zaïre-Emery before. It is – counting the first leg – the fourth aluminum goal for the Parisians, who are in no way to be envied for their bad luck.

Especially since it was added a little later that goalscorer Hummels fouled Dembéle, who was pushing into the penalty area. However, the 35-year-old hits the ex-Dortmunder a few centimeters from the box, which is why referee Daniele Orsato decides on a free kick instead of pointing to the penalty point. This doesn’t lead to a goal, nor do Luis Enrique’s team’s other attempts.

At one point, Dortmund blocked several shots in a row. Another time, Marquinhos heads just wide of the goal. Then Gregor Kobel, BVB’s Zurich goalkeeper, directs a shot from Mbappé onto the top edge of the crossbar and Vitinha’s long-range shot also hits the rafters – these are the fifth and sixth aluminum goals in the 180 minutes of the two semi-finals.

Dortmund is in the Champions League final for the third time after 1997 and 2013, which, like eleven years ago, will take place in London. Overall, the Bundesliga club’s success is somewhat fortunate, but not undeserved. The BVB is dominated by the Parisians supported with money from Qatar, whose market value (1.02 My. EUR) that of the semi-final opponent (464 million euros) according to Transfermarkt was more than double, only in the second half of the second leg, in which Dortmund were able to extend their lead from the first leg early on.

The opponent in the final could again be Bayern Munich – or Real Madrid. The second leg of the second semi-final duel takes place on Wednesday evening. Meanwhile, investors, whose goal since joining PSG in 2011 has been triumph in the premier class, are likely to become more and more impatient.
