Cambodia’s epidemic slows, increasing cases continue to decline

by admin

China News Agency, Phnom Penh, November 11 (Reporter Ouyang Kaiyu) Since the beginning of November, the epidemic in Cambodia has slowed down, and the number of new confirmed cases per day has remained at double digits. Thanks to the accelerated promotion of the new crown vaccination campaign and the gradual liberalization of activities in various industries across the country, so far, the Cambodian epidemic has not rebounded on a large scale.

According to a report from the Ministry of Health of Cambodia on the 11th, there were 66 new confirmed cases of new coronary pneumonia in the country that day, 71 new cases were cured and discharged, and 5 new cases died, of which 3 cases were not vaccinated. Of the newly confirmed cases, 58 were community-transmitted infections and 8 were imported confirmed cases. Up to now, a total of 119,000 cases have been diagnosed nationwide in Cambodia, a total of 115,000 cases have been cured, and a total of 2,850 cases have died.

The “2·20” community transmission incident in Cambodia this year caused the rapid spread of the new crown virus in the country. During this period, it also experienced the ravages of the delta mutant virus. The number of newly diagnosed cases in a single day reached more than 1,000.

With the strong support of China and other countries and international organizations, Cambodia’s vaccination work has accelerated. As of now, more than 85% of the people have been vaccinated against the new crown. In the past few days, the number of newly confirmed cases in Cambodia has remained at double digits, the lowest level since the “2·20” community transmission incident.

With the continuous increase of the new crown vaccination rate, the signs of Cambodian social life returning to the right track are becoming more and more obvious. On October 20th, Cambodia reopened the tourist visa application. In the closing speech of the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit on October 25, Prime Minister Hun Sen stated that Cambodia will launch a strategy of “recovering and promoting economic growth under the new normal of coexisting with the virus”, reopening the country and restarting economic and social activities. On November 1, the Cambodian government announced the full liberalization of social activities, and all walks of life immediately reopened. As of now, there has not been a large-scale rebound of the epidemic.

Analysts pointed out that in order to maintain economic operations, the Cambodian government has launched 10 rounds of economic relief measures including relief payments to 700,000 residents. However, in the context of limited national reserves, a sharp slowdown in economic growth, and a decrease in fiscal revenue, continuous government relief is not a long-term solution. To reopen the country and restart the economy is a choice that must be made to a certain extent. (over)
